Late goals by Hamline sink men's soccer

NORTHFIELD, Minn. –  Late goals from Trevor Lewellen and Stefan Kingsinger gave Hamline a 2-1 victory over the St. Olaf College men's soccer team in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matchup Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (3-7-0, 2-3-0 MIAC) led 1-0 inside the final 15 minutes on sophomore Will Douglas' goal early in the second half, but Hamline (5-3-0, 2-2-0 MIAC) rallied with goals from Lewellen and Kingsinger in the final 10:49 of the game to steal the victory. Lewellen tied the game in the 80th minute before Kingsinger won it five minutes later with a late header.

Just 3:15 into the second half, the Oles took the lead when Douglas netted his team-high fourth goal of the season. From the middle of the field, Alexis Legigand found Farid Sani on the right wing and Sani crossed for Douglas to nod the ball in in front of the goal to break the deadlock.

The Pipers responded from a free kick opportunity in the 80th minute of play when Lewellen was on hand to put in a rebound in front of the net after senior Ben Westermeyer made an initial save but the ball broke to Lewellen.

Just five minutes later, Hamline grabbed the game-winner from Kingsinger's header in the middle of the box off a free kick from Adam King on the left side.

In the first half, Hamline came the closest to scoring when King had a one-on-one opportunity against Westmeyer but shot wide of the left post after Westermeyer charged off his line. The Pipers took seven of the game's nine first-half shots.

After Douglas' goal put the Oles ahead, St. Olaf had a chance to extend its lead in the 77th minute when sophomore Thierno Gueye rose highest on a free kick but headed just over.

The Oles are back to action Saturday, Oct. 6 as they travel to St. Paul, Minn. for a MIAC matchup against Macalester at 7:30 p.m.
