NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Alex Rodriguez netted his second hat trick of the season against the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to lead No. 5 Augsburg University to a 4-1 win over the Oles on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
After scoring all three goals in a 3-0 victory in the season opener, Rodriguez scored twice in the first period and again in the third for Augsburg (15-3-2, 9-1-1 MIAC). First year
Tyler Bump scored his fourth goal of the season for St. Olaf (4-11-2, 2-5-2 MIAC) in the loss.
Just 49 seconds into the game, Rodriguez opened the scoring to give the Auggies a very early lead. A little less than 12 minutes later, he doubled his tally and his team's lead by blasting a shot into the top corner at 12:38 to put the visitors ahead, 2-0, after one period.
After Austin Dollimer extended Augsburg's lead to 3-0 at 12:16 of the second, Bump got the Oles on the board five minutes later off assists from
Tyler Uravage and
Luke Ranallo. From behind his own net, Ranallo found Bump up the left boards and the first year exchanged passes with Uravage before flying into the Augsburg zone and beating Nick Schmit on the blocker side.
Bump's four goals put him in a tie with fellow first year
Mitch Dolter for the team lead. Ranallo earned his fifth assist of the season, which is tied for the second-most on the team, and Uravage picked up his fourth.
Rodriguez scored the only goal of the third period at 10:22 to complete his hat trick and push his MIAC-leading goal total to 16 this season. The game was St. Olaf's third against a top-five team in its last six games.
The shot count finished 37-15 in favor of the Auggies, with Schmit making 14 saves to pick up the win. Junior
Noah Parker stopped 20-of-22 shots over the final two periods after senior
Eric Hancock registered 13 saves in the first period.
The Oles and Auggies conclude their series on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis.
