Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Minnesota Morris upends men's soccer, 1-0

MORRIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team outshot the University of Minnesota Morris by a count of 33-3, but the Cougars scored the lone goal of the game to defeat the Oles, 1-0, in a non-conference contest on Sunday at Cougar Field.

Despite managing just three shots in the game, Minnesota Morris (4-11-0) got a 72nd-minute goal from Micah Winningham that proved to be the difference. St. Olaf (7-6-0) generated 33 shots, including 12 shots on goal, on the afternoon but could not find a goal.

Winningham's goal came on the Cougars' third and final shot of the game, as he was played in down the right on a counter attack and slid a shot across the goal. Carter Watkinson and Addison Fugitt earned assists on the goal.

St. Olaf held Minnesota Morris without a shot in the opening 45 minutes while taking 15 shots of its own. First year defender Lance Halberg had two of the Oles' three shots on goal in the first 45 minutes.

The Oles created four shots on goal in the first 7:05 of the second half and had 18 shots after the break. Sophomore Lucas Gaulmin and junior Will Douglas each had seven shots in the game.

Junior Farid Sani nearly tied the game at 1-1 in the 82nd minute but saw his near-post shot from the right side of the box saved after being slipped in by Douglas. Douglas had a chance to tie it in the 90th minute, shooting just wide of the far post on the turn from the right side of the box.

St. Olaf returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Sunday, Oct. 20 at Saint John's at 12 p.m.
