COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – Junior
Will Douglas scored the game-winning goal in the 103rd minute to give the St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 2-1 road victory over Saint John's University in double overtime on Sunday afternoon at Haws Field.
Early in the second overtime period, Douglas picked up the lower-left corner from the top of the box to give St. Olaf (8-6-0, 4-3-0 MIAC) all three points in a matchup of teams vying for spots in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs. The head-to-head win pushed the Oles ahead of Saint John's (8-6-0, 4-4-0 MIAC) and into fourth place in the MIAC standings.
Douglas' goal was his third of the season and the fifth game-winning goal of his career. On the goal, senior
Pato Cortina earned his first assist of the season, while sophomore
Kieran Mullen picked up his second helper of the fall.
The Johnnies took an early lead when Kagan Foster netted his team-leading ninth goal of the season exactly five minutes into the game. Foster nearly doubled Saint John's lead in the 17th minute, but junior
Hamza Osman made a diving save to keep it a 1-0 game.
Shortly after Osman's save, St. Olaf had several chances to tie it up, but Payton Spencer made back-to-back saves on
Sam Heupel and Douglas in the 19th minute. Heupel had a consecutive shots in front following the ensuing corner but both efforts were blocked.
The Oles' pressure eventually paid off as St. Olaf's seventh corner of the opening half was deflected in off a Saint John's defender in the 35th minute to even the score at 1-1 at halftime. The goal came after Spencer made a leaping save to deny
Thierno Gueye's shot from the right side.
Clear-cut chances were hard to come by in the second half, as all seven combined shots by the two teams were off target. Douglas had a chance to win it in the 89th minute for the Oles but headed a
Lance Halberg cross wide at the far post.
First year
Max Stauffer created a chance just 36 seconds into the first overtime, beating a couple Johnnie defender at the top of the box before shooting wide of the near post with his left foot from the left side of the box.
Osman made a save on Brian Pacceli just 1:11 into the second overtime and, a little over a minute later, St. Olaf sprung a counter attack after a Saint John's free kick that Douglas finished off to give the Oles their second overtime victory of the season.
St. Olaf hosts nationally-ranked Luther College on Wednesday, Oct. 23 at 3 p.m. in a makeup from a Sept. 11 postponement.
