Men's soccer blanks Bethel, 5-0

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and added three goals in the second half to blank Bethel University, 5-0, in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contest Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (9-7-0, 5-3-0 MIAC) first years Max Stauffer and Henrique Felix de Siqueira scored their first career goals, while first year Tomas Gusmao, senior Keith Loukas and junior Will Douglas added a goal apiece to down Bethel (6-9-1, 1-7-1 MIAC) and pick up the Oles' sixth shutout of the season.

Stauffer led the Oles with a goal and two assists, while Gusmao added a goal and an assist.

Junior goalkeeper Hamza Osman kept the Royals off the board early in the game, blocking a shot from Bethel's Zach Caouette in the ninth minute of the game.

After a pass from Stauffer, Douglas found Gusmao up the middle from the left side of the box to account for Gusmao's second goal of the season and to put St. Olaf up, 1-0, in the 15th minute of the game.

Loukas doubled the Oles' lead in the 29th minute off a free kick near midfield that went off the goalie's hands. Osman kept St. Olaf up two heading into the half after recording a save at 41:08.

Stauffer found the back of the net from the right side of the field in the 80th minute and extended St. Olaf's lead to 3-0. Less than two minutes later Stauffer found Douglas up the middle from the right side of the field to extend the Oles' lead to four. Douglas' goal was his fourth of the season.

After a corner kick by the Oles', senior Pato Cortina crossed the ball to the center of the box in front of the goal and de Siqueira headed it in to the lower left side of the goal to account for St. Olaf's final goal of the game.

This is the first time since 2008 that St. Olaf has recorded multiple games in a season of scoring five or more goals while holding its opponent scoreless. In 2008, the Oles defeated Saint Mary's, 6-0, on Sept. 13, and Bethany Lutheran, 9-0 on Oct. 28.

The Oles posted 17 shots in the game, including 14 on goal, while holding Bethel to 11 shots and four on goal.

St. Olaf is back to action on Tuesday, Oct. 29 at cross-town rival Carleton, beginning at 3:30 p.m., before finishing the regular season at home against Concordia (Minn.) on Saturday, Nov. 2. The Oles currently sit fifth in the conference behind Macalester and a win ahead of Saint John's, as the top six teams in the MIAC will go to the MIAC Playoffs.
