Men's soccer edged in overtime by Carleton, clinches playoff spot

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The St. Olaf College men's soccer team clinched its first berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs since 2015 despite being edged, 2-1, in overtime by crosstown rival Carleton College on Tuesday at Bell Field.

St. Olaf (9-8-0, 5-4-0 MIAC) took the lead on a goal by junior Will Douglas in the 61st minute before Carleton (13-3-1, 6-2-1 MIAC) answered 10 minutes later to eventually send the game to overtime. Inside the final three minutes of the first overtime, Charlie Hall grabbed the game-winning goal for Carleton, which was ranked No. 9 in the North Region this week by the United Soccer Coaches.

Despite the loss, the Oles clinched a spot in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs and will appear in the six-team field for the first time since 2015 after Macalester defeated Saint Mary's on Tuesday night. St. Olaf is tied with Saint John's for the No. 5 seed with one game remaining and can finish as the No. 4, No. 5 or No. 6 seed depending on the results on the final day of the regular season on Saturday.

In the first half, the Knights had an early chance from Tonny Aton in the 14th minute, but he shot wide of the left post on a Carleton counter attack after a St. Olaf corner kick.

Less than 10 minutes later, junior goalkeeper Hamza Osman made a leaping save to parry a header by Marco da Cunha out for a corner kick after da Cunha got on the end of a Brennan Johnson cross from the right wing.

St. Olaf's best chances to score in the opening half came in the 26th minute, when junior Thierno Gueye drew a save from Aaron Forman with an effort from the right side of the box and senior Pato Cortina's follow-up shot was blocked.

Just seconds into the second half, Douglas volleyed just over the bar from a sharp angle on the right. Five minutes later, da Cunha got in behind the St. Olaf defense but could not get a shot off, as Osman rushed off his line to grab the ball off his foot.

Douglas broke the deadlock in the 61st minute, finishing into the lower-right corner of the goal after being played in on goal by Cortina. The goal was Douglas' fifth of the season and his third in the last four games.

Douglas' opener came just two minutes after senior Sam Heupel nearly gave the Oles the lead, heading wide of the right post after a free kick from near midfield made it through a crowd in front of the goal.

Carleton answered in the 71st minute when da Cunha beat a defender down the left side, found Justin Crawmer in front and Crawmer fired the ball into the roof of the net from close range.

Neither team had a shot on goal after Crawmer's goal until Hall's 98th-minute game-winner. The goal was again set up by da Cunha, who got past a defender on the left side and found Hall, who slid the ball into the lower-right corner of the goal to give the Knights their third-straight one-goal win in the series.

The Oles celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, Nov. 2 prior to a 1 p.m. kickoff against Concordia (Minn.) in their regular-season finale at Rolf Mellby Field.
