NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Nate Weaver scored in the final minute of double overtime to give Concordia College (Minn.) a 1-0 win over the St. Olaf College men's soccer team in the regular-season finale for both teams on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
With 31 seconds to go in the second overtime session, Weaver put home a rebound off a blocked shot to lift Concordia (9-7-2, 2-7-0 MIAC) past St. Olaf (9-9-0, 5-5-0 MIAC). After the loss and a Carleton loss to Saint John's, the Oles will be the No. 6 seed in the MIAC Playoffs and will travel across the river to play the third-seeded Knights in the quarterfinals of the MIAC Playoffs on Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 2 p.m.
Prior to kickoff, St. Olaf honored its senior class of
Keith Loukas,
Sam Heupel,
Pato Cortina and
Jovan Carter, along with managers Lucas Michaels and Chajli Thao, on the field for their efforts over their careers. The senior helped the Oles clinch their first MIAC Playoffs berth since 2015 this season.
Midway through the first half, St. Olaf had a chance to score when the ball was played into the box from the center of the field and first year
Max Stauffer got a shot off, but Concordia goalkeeper Noah Sahr was there to make the save. The Oles limited the Cobbers to just two shots in the first half.
With 15 minutes to go, first year
Tomas Gusmao fired a shot wide of the left post and, seven minutes later, he set up Stauffer on the right side of the box, but Stauffer's shot was saved by a diving Sahr.
With time winding down and the teams appeared headed for a scoreless tie, Aronah Mukhtar had a shot blocked in the St. Olaf box and Weaver fired in the rebound to give Concordia the win. The goal came on just the third shot on goal of the game for the Cobbers.
Sahr made eight saves in the shutout win for Concordia, while junior
Hamza Osman had two saves for St. Olaf.
