EAU CLAIRE, Wis. – No. 12-ranked UW-Eau Claire used a five-goal second period to pull away for a 7-2 victory over the St. Olaf College men's hockey team in a non-conference matchup on Friday night at Hobbs Ice Center.
UW-Eau Claire (1-0-1) held a 1-0 lead after the first period before exploding for five goals in the second to build a 6-0 lead. Seniors
Kyle Rimbach and
Roshen Jaswal scored their first goals of the young season in the loss for St. Olaf (0-3-0).
Six skaters scored for the Blugolds in the win, led by a pair of goals from Jake Bresser. Andrew McGlynn tallied three assists for the hosts, while Logan Von Ruden and Charles Weiand each had a goal and an assist.
UW-Eau Claire killed off an early penalty in the game's first three minutes before Bresser grabbed the lone goal of the opening 20 minutes at 9:26. The Blugolds quickly extended their lead to 3-0 inside the first four minutes of the second period with goals from Von Ruden and Weiand 1:02 apart.
Later in the period, UW-Eau Claire netted three goals in the space of 52 seconds to take a commanding 6-0 lead before Rimbach got the Oles on the board at 16:42 off assists from
Andrew Willner and
Will Dittrich.
Trailing 6-1 after two periods, St. Olaf climbed one goal closer at 4:51 of the third when Willner and first year
Evan Shoemaker set up Jaswal's power-play goal to make it a 6-2 game. Jack Murphy capped the scoring at 13:09 for the Blugolds.
Sophomore
Cooper Lukenda recorded 27 saves in the first 36:06 of the game before senior
Noah Parker came on to make 17 saves over the final 23:54. Zach Dyment picked up the victory of UW-Eau Claire with a 21-save evening, making 13 of his 21 saves in the third period.
St. Olaf visits UW-Superior for a 7:05 p.m. puck drop on Saturday, Nov. 9 to wrap up its weekend on the road.
