SUPERIOR, Wis. – Host UW-Superior used three power-play goals to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team by a 3-2 margin in a non-conference contest on Saturday night at Wessman Arena.
Andrew Durham scored two of the three power-play goals in the game and added an assist for UW-Superior (2-0-0), as the Yellowjackets scored once in each period to defeat St. Olaf (0-4-0). The Oles got goals from seniors
Will Dittrich and
Kyle Rimbach.
In a first period that included six minor penalties, UW-Superior scored the period's only goal on Durham's first of the night at 11:48, which came on the Yellowjackets' third power-play opportunity of the period.
On UW-Superior's fourth man advantage of the period, the Oles tied the score on a short-handed goal by Dittrich off an assist from classmate
Kyle Rimbach to send the two teams to the locker room tied at a goal apiece.
At 12:32 of the second period, Durham put the Yellowjackets on top for the second time at 2-1 with his second power-play tally of the game, with Charles Martin earning an assist. The goal came after Artur Terchiyev ran a shot off the pipe earlier in the period.
Pavel Mikhasenok extended UW-Superior's lead to 3-1 at 8:21 of the third period just 21 seconds after a slashing penalty on St. Olaf. The Oles went right back on the penalty kill 1:10 later but managed to kill off the penalty to keep it a two-goal deficit.
With 1:40 remaining, St. Olaf pulled its goalie and UW-Superior nearly capitalized on the empty net when Mikhasenok nearly got his second goal of the game but saw his shot hit the pipe. With just 27 seconds to go and an extra skater on the ice, Rimbach tipped in a shot by
Roshen Jaswal to bring the Oles within a goal with his second goal in as many nights.
St. Olaf won the ensuing faceoff and had a desperation attempt to tie the game on a shot from his own blue line by senior
Tuukka Totro, but Oscar Svensson made the last of his 19 saves on the night to seal the win for the Yellowjackets. Senior
Noah Parker made 36 stops in the loss for St. Olaf, which was outshot by a 39-21 margin.
Next up for St. Olaf is a home game against the University of St. Thomas on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener for both teams.
