OWATONNA, Minn. – Senior
Gus Fedje-Johnston rallied for a three-set victory in the decisive match at No. 4 singles to give the St. Olaf College men's tennis team a 5-4 victory over Hamline University in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener on Saturday afternoon at Owatonna Tennis Center.
With the team score locked at 4-4, Fedje-Johnston saved a match point in the decisive super tiebreaker and came from a set down for a 1-6, 7-6 (2), 12-10 victory over Tou Ger Xiong to give St. Olaf (1-1, 1-0 MIAC) the victory over Hamline (1-2, 0-1 MIAC). Fedje-Johnston faced a match point while trailing 10-9 before winning the final three points of the match.
The Oles took a 2-1 lead into singles with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Fedje-Johnston and
Corey Loken paired up for an 8-6 win at the second spot, while first years
Ethan Bruha and
Tim Roback posted their first collegiate dual match victory with an 8-4 win at third doubles.
Prior to Fedje-Johnston's heroics, St. Olaf got singles victories from
Christopher Prokosch and
Tony Klagge at No. 3 and No. 6 singles, respectively, while Hamline got straight-set wins from Jake Trondson and Elias Ramirez at the top of the lineup and one from Andrew Argeros at No. 5 singles.
Prokosch posted a 6-4, 6-3 win against Nazeer Robinson and Klagge cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory against Dang Lee.
St. Olaf returns to Owatonna Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 23 for a 3:30 p.m. match against Luther College.
