NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College athletic department is proud to announce its eight-member Hall of Fame Class of 2019. The eight inductees will be honored at an induction ceremony at Skoglund Center at 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 1.
The eight-member class includes long-time head men's soccer coach Kurt Anderson, Susannah Brokl '07,
Katie Detwiler '05, Janet Hengel Anderson '01, Kevin Jensen '00, Andrew Schmiesing '09, Keith Townsend '05 and Nelson Westby '09.
Kurt Anderson spent 30 seasons as the head men's soccer coach from 1989-2018, before retiring this past January with a career record of 301-212-41 (.580). His teams went 168-106-26 (.603) in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC), winning six MIAC Championships (1992, 1998, 2004, 2011, 2014, 2015), appearing in six NCAA Tournaments (1992, 1998, 1999, 2009, 2011, 2015) and earning two MIAC Playoff titles (2011, 2015). Anderson was named the MIAC Coach of the Year four times (1996, 1998, 2011, 2014) and led the Oles to their first-ever "Sweet 16" appearance in 2015.
Anderson also led the St. Olaf women's soccer program for five seasons from 2001-05, recording a record of 46-37-7 (.550), giving him 347 wins at St. Olaf and 408 for his career as a Division III coach. He also was an assistant coach for the Ole baseball team from 1991-2017, helping St. Olaf to 638 victories, five MIAC Championships and eight NCAA Tournament appearances.
Susannah Brokl is St. Olaf women's hockey's all-time leader in goals and ranks second in points, tallying 53 goals and 55 assists for 108 points in three seasons after transferring from Division I Northeastern University. Her 39 points (19 goals, 20 assists) in 2005-06 stand as a single-season program record, as do her 21 goals in 2004-05. Her 25 assists in 2006-07 are tied for the most in a season in program history. Brokl was an All-MIAC selection in each of her three seasons as an Ole and was an American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) West First Team All-American following her senior season, which saw St. Olaf tie the program record with 15 wins and post its best-ever finish (second) in the MIAC standings.
Katie Detwiler was a nine-time MIAC champion during her four-year career from 2002-05, including winning conference championships in the 400-yard individual medley in each of her four seasons. She also won MIAC titles in the 200-yard IM in her final three seasons, won the 200-yard butterfly as a junior and claimed the 1,650-yard freestyle as a first year. As a junior, she was named the MIAC Women's Swimmer of the Year, making her one of just two Oles to earn that honor since 2002.
Janet Hengel Anderson was a two-time All-American pole vaulter for the Oles from 1998-2001, finishing tied for fifth at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships in as a junior and seventh at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track & Field Championships as a senior. A four-time national qualifier, Hengel finished 12th in the inaugural NCAA Division III pole vault competition indoors as a junior in 2000 and 11th outdoors as a senior. A three-time MIAC pole vault champion, she set a program and MIAC record at the indoor conference championships in 2000, clearing 11' 0.25". A year later, she set a school record and tied the MIAC record by clearing 11' 2.25" indoors, a mark that now ranks tied for second in school history. Her mark of 11' 6.5" outdoors in 2001 is third-best in school history. She also competed in the 400-meter hurdles and ranks eighth on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event (64.89).
Kevin Jensen was the MIAC MVP and an All-American in both of his seasons at St. Olaf and helped lead the Oles to the NCAA Tournament in both 1998 and 1999. As a junior, he was a First Team All-West Region selection and a Third Team All-American after tallying 31 points in 13 goals and five assists in 19 games. As a senior, Jensen scored 22 goals and added 10 assists for 54 points in 20 games on his way to First Team All-West Region and First Team All-American honors. Jensen is one of just two First Team All-Americans in program history and was part of the 1998 MIAC co-champion team. The Oles were ranked as high as No. 5 in the country in his junior season and peaked at No. 3 during his senior campaign.
Andrew Schmiesing was a standout in both baseball and football for the Oles and was St. Olaf's highest-ever MLB draft pick at the time, after being selected in the 11th round (362nd overall) by the Minnesota Twins in 2007. A two-time All-MIAC and two-time First Team All-Region selection, Schmiesing was also a Second Team ABCA/Rawlings All-America pick in 2007. He ranks in the program's top six in home runs (t-6th, 17), triples (t-6th, 10), runs (t-5th, 128), batting average (3rd, .396) and hits (6th, 173). St. Olaf went a combined 83-47 overall and 44-16 in the MIAC in his three seasons, winning the MIAC Playoff title in 2006 and advancing to the NCAA regionals in 2006 and 2007. In football, Schmiesing was a three-time Second Team All-MIAC selection. He ranks third in program history in receiving touchdowns (26) and fifth in both receptions (148) and receiving yards (2,384).
Keith Townsend remains the all-time leading point scorer in men's hockey program history after collecting 111 points over his four-year career. One of eight Oles to play in at least 100 games in his career, Townsend tallied 35 goals and 76 assists in 103 games in a St. Olaf uniform. His tally of 37 points (13 goals, 24 assists) in 2002-03 is the highest total for an Ole since at least 2000-01. Townsend was an All-MIAC selection as a sophomore and senior, as well as an Honorable Mention All-MIAC pick as a junior, and, as a senior, captained the team that advanced to the MIAC Playoff semifinals.
Nelson Westby was a four-time national champion and two-time MIAC Swimmer of the Year at St. Olaf from 2006-09. Westby won national championships in the 200-yard individual medley in each of his final three seasons, as well as the 200-yard breaststroke as a senior. The 20-time All-American is one of three Oles to be named MIAC Swimmer of the Year and the only one to do it twice (2007, 2009). Westby holds MIAC individual records in the 100-yard breaststroke (54.48, 2009), 200-yard breaststroke (1:58.86, 2008) and 200-yard individual medley (1:48.54, 2009) and was part of the MIAC record-holding 200-yard medley relay (1:29.82, 2009).
One of just 37 student-athletes in the history of NCAA Division III to win at least three national titles in the same event, Westby qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trails for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China in the 100-meter breaststroke. His efforts helped the Oles to MIAC Championships in 2007 and 2009 and top-10 national finishes in all four of his seasons.
