LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Senior
Corey Loken provided the clinching fifth point at No. 1 singles, as the St. Olaf College men's tennis team edged Concordia College (Minn.) by a 5-4 margin on Thursday evening at Lakeville Life Time Fitness.
With St. Olaf (4-6, 3-5 MIAC) holding a 4-3 advantage, Loken completed his straight-set victory at No. 1 singles to clinch the win over Concordia (5-14, 1-8 MIAC) before the Cobbers won the final match on court to account for the 5-4 margin.
The Oles claimed two of the three doubles matches to assure themselves that a singles split would be enough to record the victory.
Ethan Bruha/
Kevin Kalkus posted an 8-1 victory at No. 3 doubles before Concordia's top pairing of Erik Porter/Jared Saue canceled that out with an 8-5 win. Loken and
Christopher Prokosch sent St. Olaf into singles with the advantage courtesy of an 8-4 triumph at second doubles.
Tony Klagge and Bruha provided wins in the first two singles matches to finish to push the Oles' lead to 4-1. Klagge logged a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Jake Peters at No. 5 singles, while Bruha got past Christian Larson, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.
Ben Swanson and Saue brought the Cobbers back within a point, 4-3, with wins at No. 3 and No. 2 singles, respectively, before Loken finished off a 6-3, 6-3 win against Porter at No. 1 singles. The victory was Loken's fourth in his last six singles matches and his team-high third MIAC singles win of the season.
Carter Steffes outlasted
Gus Fedje-Johnston, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 10-7 at No. 4 singles in the lone three-set match of the evening.
