Oles second after day one of MIAC Championships

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's track and field team sits second after day one of the 2019 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which began on Friday afternoon at O'Shaughnessy Stadium at the University of St. Thomas.

St. Olaf started the day atop the standings after placing three of the top four of the heptathlon last week and ended the day second with 40 points, six behind leader St. Thomas. Concordia (34) and Hamline (31) were third and fourth, respectively.

The Oles picked up eight points in the 4x800-meter relay, as Stephanie Balas, Carolyn Carpenter, Lisa Fisher and Jena Hauch placed second with a time of 9:29.07 to earn All-MIAC Honorable Mention honors.

Bryony Hawgood added six points for St. Olaf, as she earned All-MIAC honors and placed third in the 10,000-meter run (37:41.89), besting her previous personal best by nearly a minute with the seventh-best time on St. Olaf's all-time top-10 list. Kelsey Weed contributed two points with a seventh-place finish in the javelin throw (32.62m, 107').

In the 200-meter dash, Johanna Glaaser was sixth in the preliminaries and third in her heat, qualifying for finals, with a personal-best time of 26.18. Glaaser and senior Makenna Ash qualified 1-2 in the 400-meter dash, with Ash running a career-best 57.52 seconds and Glaaser finishing in 57.73. Ash's time ranks fourth on St. Olaf's all-time top-10 list.

Jena Hauch finished seventh in the preliminaries and qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run, crossing the line in 2:19.16. First year Ellen Mickelson will compete in the finals of the 1,500-meter run after placing fourth in the prelims (4:54.47).

Laura Kammer and Schoustra both qualified for the 100-meter hurdles finals, as Kammer finished fourth with a personal-best time of 15.72, which is 10th on St. Olaf's all-time top-10 list, and Schoustra was sixth in 15.87 seconds.

St. Olaf is back to action on Saturday, May 10 for the final day of the 2019 MIAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships at O'Shaughnessy Stadium with field events beginning at 2 p.m. and track events at 3 p.m.
