Volleyball finishes Pacific Coast Classic with 3-1 record after day two split

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team split a pair of four-set matches, defeating California Lutheran University (15-25, 25-18, 25-16, 25-19) before falling to No. 5 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (25-16, 25-22, 20-25, 25-15), to conclude the Pacific Coast Classic with a 3-1 record on Saturday at Roberts Pavilion.

After dropping the first set to California Lutheran (2-2), St. Olaf (3-1) claimed the final three sets by at least seven points to down the Regals, who were receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Poll, in four. Trailing the No. 5-ranked team in the country by two sets on their home court, the Oles rallied to win the third set before Claremont-Mudd-Scripps (3-1) closed out the match in four.

Following the conclusion of the tournament, sophomore Katelyn Lannom and senior Lauren Rewers were named to the PCC All-Tournament Team. Lannom hit .309 and totaled 33 kills, 10 digs, nine blocks and seven aces, while Rewers had a team-high 49 kills and averaged 3.27 kills, 2.47 digs and 1.33 blocks per set over the four matches.

The Regals broke a 6-6 tie early in the first by winning six of the next seven points, leading to a St. Olaf timeout down 12-7. Cal Lutheran won four of the next five points out of the break to prompt another timeout and held St. Olaf off after the Oles got within 17-13.

Three early kills from Rewers helped St. Olaf jump out to a 7-2 lead at the start of the second. Leading 15-11, the Oles won seven-straight points on Jarnigan's serve to stretch their lead to 22-11 and won three of the final four points of the set after the Regals trimmed their deficit to 22-17.

Midway through the third, St. Olaf won six-of-seven points to open up a 19-13 lead, with Reid contributing three kills in the stretch. Reid added two more kills in the latter stages of the set to help send the Oles to a two-sets-to-one lead.

After trailing 3-0 in the fourth, St. Olaf went on an 8-1 run to take an 8-4 advantage, as Jarnigan had back-to-back aces late in the spurt. Cal Lutheran hung around, trailing just 11-10, until the Oles opened up a 21-14 advantage with a 10-4 run. St. Olaf led by at least five the rest of the set on its way to a third-straight victory.
