Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Carthage tops men's soccer

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Cole Beaton scored his first career goal, but the St. Olaf College men's soccer team fell to non-conference opponent Carthage College, 5-1, on Friday evening at Rolf Mellby Field.

After Carthage (2-3-0) led 1-0 in the first half, the Red Men got goals from Freddy Martinez, Nicholas Messineo, Noah Smeja and Vinny Messineo in the second, despite St. Olaf (3-1-0) out-shooting the Red Men, 18-17, in the game.

N. Messineo found the back of the net in the eighth minute, tapping in a rebound after his first shot hit the post following a free kick . In the 49th minute, Martinez doubled Carthage's score as he connected with a cross from the right in the middle of the box.

The Oles had chances to get within a goal early in the second half after junior Will Douglas and first year Henrique Felix de Siqueira posted shots. Carthage scored goals in the 64th and 67th minutes to make the score 4-0.

Junior Farid Sani had back-to-back shots with less than 20 minutes remaining, but the Christian Lekki was able to grab two saves to keep the Oles off the board.

After a goal from V. Messineo with less than 10 minutes left, St. Olaf answered 16 seconds later with a goal from Beaton to put the Oles on the board. Junior Folarin Bandele found Beaton at the top left side of the box, and he popped it over the goalkeeper's head to the right side of the net.

St. Olaf will be back to action on Sunday, Sept. 15 for a non-conference contest against No. 16 Loras College at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
