NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore
Lucas Gaulmin scored the lone goal of the game in the final minute of the first overtime period to give the St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over regionally-ranked and previously-unbeaten Wartburg College on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
With the clock winding down in the first overtime, Gaulmin cut in from near the end line on the left side of the box, played a ball towards the far post that a Wartburg (3-1-2) defender attempted to clear and put over the line. The win was the first for St. Olaf (5-3-0) over the Knights since 2015.
Wartburg was ranked No. 4 in the North Region in this afternoon's United Soccer Coaches North Region rankings.
Gaulmin's goal was his second of the season and came with 43.7 seconds remaining in the first overtime. Junior goalkeeper
Hamza Osman and the St. Olaf defense kept Wartburg scoreless for 99:17 to post their fourth shutout of the season.
Osman made five saves in his fifth victory of the season, including one on a last-second effort by Wartburg's Nathan Feiner at the end of regulation. Brennon Woody had two saves prior to Gaulmin's goal for the Knights.
Wartburg had nine of the game's 10 shots in the opening half, but St. Olaf forced six corner kicks prior to the break. Feiner's last-gasp attempt at the end of regulation was the closest either team came to scoring prior to Gaulmin's winner.
The Oles return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday, Sept. 28 with a trip to the University of St. Thomas. The Tommies were receiving votes in Tuesday afternoon's regional rankings.
