Rewers cracks top-10 list in kills, volleyball sweeps Vikings

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Senior Lauren Rewers moved into the St. Olaf College volleyball program's top 10 in career kills, as the Oles began the Macalester Invitational by sweeping Bethany Lutheran with set scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-21 on Friday evening at the Leonard Center.

Rewers had 13 kills and junior Summer Reid added 12, as the pair combined for 25 of the 46 kills in the match for St. Olaf (5-1). The victory was the Oles' seventh in a row against Bethany Lutheran (2-4) and St. Olaf's 16th in the last 17 meetings with the Vikings dating back to 2005.

The 13-kill evening brought Rewers' career total to 1,115 kills, moving her past Katie Wolfram and Brenda Bliese and into ninth place in program history. Wolfram had 1,110 kills in her four-year career from 2009-12, while Bliese tallied 1,113 from 1993-96.

In addition to the 25 kills from Rewers and Reid, junior Morgan Marxer had eight kills and first year Nicole Banitt chipped in with seven. Junior Lexi Wall recorded an assist on 42 of St. Olaf's 46 kills in the match.

Defensively, senior Emily Jarnigan tallied 21 digs for her third 20-dig performance of the season and classmate Jordan Melz added 13. Rewers was the third Ole in double figures in digs with 10, giving the senior her third double-double of the season.

The Oles hit .231 in the match while holding the Vikings to a .134 clip. St. Olaf hit a match-high .289 in the opening set and rode its defense to a set-two win after limiting Macalester to a percentage of .031. The St. Olaf offense tallied 19 kills in the third set to close out the sweep.

The Oles face Knox (12 p.m.) and UW-River Falls (2 p.m.) to conclude the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 7.
