Volleyball completes 3-0 showing in St. Paul with two more wins

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team defeated Knox College, 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-14), and UW-River Falls, 3-1 (25-11, 21-25, 27-25, 25-20), to wrap up a 3-0 showing at the Macalester Invitational on Saturday at the Leonard Center.

Junior Morgan Marxer had 23 kills and hit .404 on the day for St. Olaf (7-1), as the Oles dropped just one set in the wins over Knox (2-7) and UW-River Falls (6-2). After the tournament, Marxer and senior Lauren Rewers were both named to the All-Tournament Team, as Marxer tallied 31 kills over St. Olaf's three matches, while Rewers had 28.

St. Olaf posted its highest hitting percentage in nearly 10 years by hitting .447 on its way to sweeping Knox in its first match of the day. The .447 clip was the highest for the Oles since the 2009 team hit .506 in a sweep of Presentation on Sept. 18, 2009.

Maxker led a balanced offensive attack with 10 kills and just one error on 22 swings (.409), sophomore Katelyn Lannom had nine kills and two errors on 16 swings (.438) and junior Summer Reid tallied seven kills and a single error on nine attempts (.667).

Junior Lexi Wall tallied 31 assists to go with seven digs, while senior Emily Jarnigan had a match-high 11 digs for the Oles, who held the Prairie Fire to a .079 hitting percentage. Knox hit -.042 and 0.038 in the first two sets, respectively, before hitting .079 in the third, while St. Olaf hit at least .423 in each of the three sets.

St. Olaf had 14 aces in the match, compared to one for Knox, as eight Oles had at least one ace. First year Selena Rodriguez and senior Abigail Wiedel had three apiece.

Lannom, Marxer and Rewers all reached double figures in kills, combining for 37 of St. Olaf's 51 kills in the match, as the Oles picked up a four-set win over the Falcons to wrap up the tournament with a 7-1 record.

Lannom recorded a match-high 14 kills while hitting .370 with four block assists, Marxer had 13 kills and hit .400, and Rewers pitched in with 10 kills, 12 digs and five aces. Reid and first year Nicole Banitt each posted seven kills.

Wall totaled 47 assists, her second-highest total of the season, and added 13 digs for her fifth double-double of the season. Jarnigan established a career high with 28 digs to join Rewers and Wall in double figures in the category.

St. Olaf hit .391 in the opening set while limiting UW-River Falls to a -.074 mark, but the Falcons rebounded to take the second set to even the match at a set apiece. The Oles rallied from a late deficit to steal the third set, 27-25, before going on to close out the match in four.

Next up for St. Olaf is a home match against Bethany Lutheran on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. The Oles swept the Vikings to open the Macalester Invitational on Friday evening.
