Gusmao, Osman lift men's soccer to third-straight victory

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year Tomas Gusmao scored his first collegiate goal and junior Hamza Osman saved a penalty kick late in the first half, as the St. Olaf College men's soccer team defeated Bethany Lutheran College, 1-0, on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Gusmao bent in a free kick from just outside the box in the 37th minute for the first goal of his collegiate career for the lone goal of the game for St. Olaf (3-0-0), which won its third-straight game to start the season. Five minutes after Gusmao's goal, Bethany Lutheran (1-2-0) was awarded a penalty kick, but Osman made the save to preserve the Oles' third consecutive shutout.

St. Olaf's 3-0-0 start is the team's best start to a season since the 2014 team won its first three games. The Oles have posted three-straight shutouts for the first time since Oct. 12-16, 2016.

Prior to Gusmao's opener, Osman made a kick save to deny Luuk Oosterbosch in the eighth minute and a quick-reaction save to thwart Samuel Duran three minutes later to keep the game scoreless. In the 27th minute, a leaping Osman got a fingertip to a Max Busch effort to tip it onto the left post after Busch got in behind the St. Olaf defense.

Gusmao tallied the game's lone goal in the 37th minute, curling a free kick from just outside the box on the left around the wall and inside the left post. The first year's first collegiate goal gave Gusmao a goal and two assists in his first three games as an Ole.

Late in the first half, the Vikings had a chance to tie it up from the spot, but Osman saved Busch's spot kick.

After being outshot 5-4 in the opening 45 minutes, St. Olaf took 12 of the 15 shots in the game in the second half. Moritz Bruns made six of his seven saves in the game after the break, but the Vikings were unable to find a way past Osman and the St. Olaf defense.

The Oles host Luther, which is ranked No. 8 in the country this week in the United Soccer Coaches national poll, on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 4 p.m.
