Gusties skate past men's hockey

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Gustavus Adolphus College scored three times in each of the final two periods to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, 6-0, in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After a scoreless opening period, Gustavus (6-6-0, 3-2-0 MIAC) tallied three goals in a five-minute stretch of the second period before tacking on three more in the third to down St. Olaf (2-12-0, 1-6-0 MIAC) in its first visit to St. Olaf Ice Arena. Caleb Anderson led the way for the Gusties with two goals and one assist.

Five skaters had multi-point nights for Gustavus, as Tyler Rock added a goal and an assist, while Tyler Ebner, Connor Clemons and Axel Hallin had two assists apiece. Robbie Goor recorded a 28-save shutout between the pipes for the Gusties.

Gustavus edged the shot count, 11-9, in a scoreless opening period before breaking through midway through the second period on a goal by Jared Bromberg at the 9:48 mark. Three minutes later, Rock scored on a delayed penalty call at 12:58 and Kegan Couture added a goal on the ensuing power play at 14:23 to increase the Gusties lead to 3-0 after two.

Anderson registered goals at 8:49 and 14:29 of the third before Dan Sandvig capped the scoring at 15:05 for Gustavus. After being outshot 27-19 in the first two periods, St. Olaf held a 9-6 advantage in shots on goal in the final 20 minutes, but was unable to get on the board despite having three power-play opportunities.

Sophomore Cooper Lukenda made 27 saves in the loss for St. Olaf. The two teams wrap up their series on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 7:05 p.m. at Don Roberts Ice Rink in St. Peter.
