ST. PETER, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team held a 3-1 lead in the third period before Gustavus Adolphus College rallied to force a 3-3 tie and went on to claim the extra point in 3-on-3 overtime on Saturday evening at Don Roberts Ice Rink.
St. Olaf (2-12-1, 1-6-1 MIAC) led 3-1 with less than eight minutes to go, but Gustavus (6-6-1, 3-2-1 MIAC) rallied to force the game to overtime. After a scoreless 5-on-5 overtime, Axel Hallin scored with 48 seconds to go in the ensuing 3-on-3 overtime to give the Gusties the extra point in the standings.
First year
Filip Dusek tallied the first goal of his collegiate career and added an assist for the Oles, who also got goals from first year
Evan Shoemaker and sophomore
Jared Pedersen.
Just 54 seconds into the game, Shoemaker netted his first-career goal off an assist from Dusek to give St. Olaf a very-early lead. Gustavus answered, as Caleb Anderson scored his third goal of the weekend at 13:23 to even the game at 1-1 after one period.
After the Gusties killed off a pair of St. Olaf power plays earlier in the period, Pedersen scored the only goal of the second period at 14:16 to put the Oles on top, 2-1, after two. First year
Ashton Altmann picked up his fourth assist of the season on the goal to tie him for the team lead in the category.
Dusek gave St. Olaf a two-goal cushion at 4:12 of the third with his first goal as an Ole off an assist from senior
Lucas Mutschelknaus. The Oles proceeded to kill off two Gustavus power plays before earning one of their own but gave up a shorthanded goal by Nick Klishko on a 3-on-2 rush at 12:02 to make it a one-goal game.
Just 2:22 later, the Gusties tied the game at 3-3 on a goal by Will LeNeave – his third point of the game – to eventually send the game to overtime. Both goalies had just one save to make in the 5-on-5 overtime.
In the 3-on-3 overtime, Robbie Goor made three saves, including one to deny
Dana Engram on a 2-on-1 rush with 2:38 to go, to keep the game tied before Hallin won it by firing the puck into an open net off a drop pass from Logan Norman on a 2-on-1 at 4:12.
Sophomore
Cooper Lukenda recorded 26 saves in the loss for St. Olaf, while Goor had 19 for Gustavus. Both teams were 0-for-4 on the power play in the game.
The Oles host a pair of Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) teams next weekend, starting with a matchup against UW-River Falls on Friday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m.
