NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Goals from senior
Kyle Rimbach, sophomore
Mitch Dolter and senior
Josh Radtke lifted the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 3-2 victory over UW-Stout in a non-conference matchup on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Rimbach and Dolter scored in the first 2:07 of the game to get St. Olaf (3-13-1) out to an early 2-0 lead. After UW-Stout (4-12-1) cut its deficit in half midway through the second period, Radtke restored the Oles' two-goal advantage later in the period, as St. Olaf held on despite a goal in the closing seconds by the Blue Devils.
Sophomore goaltender
Cooper Lukenda made 28 saves to pick up the victory for St. Olaf and made 21 of his 28 stops over the final two periods. UW-Stout held a slender, 30-29, advantage in shots on goal in the game, with Evan Bisek tallying 26 saves for the visitors.
Just 1:09 into the game, Rimbach scored his fourth of the year off assists from Radtke and first year
Sean Salz for St. Olaf's second-quickest goal of the season. After Salz got the puck deep in the UW-Stout zone, Radtke collected it on the right boards and fed it cross ice for Rimbach to fire into the net.
The Oles wasted no time doubling their lead when Dolter tallied his third goal of the season 58 seconds later, lifting the puck over a sprawling Bisek on a 3-on-1 off assists from sophomore
Tyler Bump and first year
Brendan Conway. Conway's point was the first of his collegiate career.
Lukenda made three close-range saves to keep the Blue Devils off the board in the first half of the second period, but UW-Stout eventually halved its deficit on an Evan Butcher goal at 10:23.
Six and a half minutes later, Radtke restored St. Olaf's two-goal advantage on a 4-on-3 power play, knocking a shot by senior
Roshen Jaswal down in front for his third goal of the season. Bump earned his second assist of the game after getting the puck to Jaswal at the top of the right circle.
Lukenda and the St. Olaf defense maintained the two-goal lead until Connor Chambers made it a one-goal game again on an extra-attacker goal with 5.1 seconds remaining. First year
Evan Shoemaker won the ensuing face-off to seal the victory.
The Oles are off until a trip to St. Cloud to face Saint John's on Thursday, Jan. 30 at 7 p.m. at the Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
