Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Men's tennis falls to St. Thomas, 6-3

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – First year Henry Smith picked up victories in both his matches and junior Dez Young made a big comeback in the second set of his singles win, but the St. Olaf College men's tennis team fell to the University of St. Thomas, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon at Baseline Tennis Center.

Smith recorded a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles and paired with senior Kevin Kalkus for a win at No. 2 doubles for St. Olaf (1-2, 1-2 MIAC), while Young rallied from 5-1 down in the second set to close out a straight-set win at No. 4 singles. St. Thomas (6-2, 3-0 MIAC) used a pair of doubles victories and wins at the top-three singles spots to remain unbeaten in conference play.

The Tommies grabbed wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to carry a lead into singles but Kalkus and Smith closed out an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles to give the Oles a point from the three doubles matches.

In singles, Smith posted a 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles to record his second-straight win in conference play. Young won the first set of his match at No. 4 singles but trailed 5-1 in the second before rallying to force a tiebreaker. In the tiebreaker, Young opened up a 6-1 lead and held on after his opponent saved three match points to close out a 6-4, 7-6 (7-4) win.

The Oles travel to Grinnell, Iowa for matches against Concordia (Neb.) and Grinnell on Saturday, Mar. 7 at 12:30 p.m. and 4 p.m.
