NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomores
Victor Gaulmin and
Hakeem Morgan each scored twice to propel the No. 17-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team to a 4-2 victory over No. 20-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College in a top-20 Senior Day showdown on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
St. Olaf (12-1-1, 7-0-0 MIAC) trailed by a 2-1 margin at the break after a penalty kick in the final minute of the half gave Gustavus (9-4-0, 4-2-0 MIAC) its second lead of the game. Morgan scored twice in the span of seven minutes in the second half and Gaulmin added a late penalty kick as the Oles picked up their 10th-straight victory.
With the win, St. Olaf secured a spot in the upcoming Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) and remains in the driver's seat for the No. 1 seed as Augsburg, Carleton, and Gustavus all have two conference losses. The victory was the second over a nationally-ranked team this month for the Oles.
Prior to the game, St. Olaf honored its five senior student-athletes -
Hamza Osman,
Thierno Gueye,
Lucas Gaulmin,
Kristian Noll, and
Kieran Mullen - and senior manager
Andrew Rejebian for their dedication to the program over their careers.
The Gusties got on the board first in the 17th minute when Matt Gibbons was on hand at the back post to score from close range. The lead did not last five minutes, however, as Gaulmin scored directly from a corner kick from the left in the 22nd minute to bring the Oles level at 1-1.
Inside the final minute of the opening half, Gustavus again went ahead when the visitors were awarded a penalty kick and Otis Anderson scored from the spot with 27 seconds to go in the half. The Gusties held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes.
Trailing by a goal, St. Olaf tied the game for a second time in the 55th minute when Morgan netted his first goal of the game, curling a left-footed shot into the top-left corner from the outside the box. Seven minutes later, Morgan doubled his tally with the game-winning goal by tucking home a rebound off a shot by sophomore
Clemente Arcuch Puig.
Morgan's nine goals this season are tied for the most in the MIAC with Concordia-Moorhead's Telvin Vah and his 24 points are the most in the conference – two more than Vah.
The Oles added an insurance goal with less than two minutes remaining when Gaulmin converted from the spot for the fourth time this season. The Gusties earned their second penalty kick of the game with 1:19 remaining but Anderson's effort hit off the left post and went straight into the arms of sophomore
Austin Williams.
Williams stopped three shots for St. Olaf in the win, while Wesley Sanders had five saves for Gustavus. Prior to Saturday, no team had scored more than two goals against the Gusties this season.
In their second of back-to-back games, the Oles visit Grinnell College for a non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 17 at 1:30 p.m.
