GRINNELL, Iowa – Senior
Kieran Mullen scored the second goal of his career 1:39 into overtime to give the No. 17-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 1-0 non-conference victory over Grinnell College on Sunday afternoon at Springer Field.
A day after celebrating his Senior Day, Mullen scored the game's lone goal in the 92nd minute to break the deadlock with his first goal since Oct. 18, 2018. The victory was the 11th in a row for St. Olaf (13-1-1) and came in the Oles' first meeting with Grinnell (7-7-0) since Sept. 5, 1998.
Early in the first overtime, Mullen was on hand at the back post to fire in a shot from the right side of the box after sophomore
Casey McCloskey sent the ball across the box from the left side. Grinnell goalkeeper Carter Benson slid across his line in attempt to stop the shot but the ball ricocheted in off him to end the game.
With the win, St. Olaf is 4-0-1 in overtime this season and the five overtime games are the program's most in a season since the 2016 team went 2-0-6 in eight games that went into extra time. The Oles' 11-game winning streak is tied for the second longest in recorded program history, matching the team's run from Sept. 23 to Oct. 17, 1987. St. Olaf's 12-game unbeaten run (11-0-1) is the third longest in recorded program history and the longest since 1999.
Both teams had opportunities to win the game in regulation as the Oles hit the crossbar twice and the Pioneers did so once. Sophomore
Clemente Arcuch Puig came within inches of opening the scoring in the 33rd minute but saw his shot from outside the box hit the underside of the bar and stay out.
Ten minutes later, Grinnell nearly took a 1-0 lead into the break, but Zeke Miller's shot in the box after a corner rang off the crossbar. First year
Shea Bechtel came the closest to scoring for either team in the second half when he sent a right-footed shot off the crossbar from the left side of the box with just under 15 minutes to go.
St. Olaf held a 15-11 advantage in shots in the game, including a slender 6-5 edge in shots on goal. Benson and sophomore
Austin Williams made five saves apiece, with Williams collecting his 13th win of the season for the Oles.
After playing two games in as many days, St. Olaf is off until Saturday, Oct. 23 when the Oles travel to face Concordia-Moorhead at 12:30 p.m. in Moorhead.
