NORTHFIELD, Minn. – First year
Matthew Pointer scored on a 2-on-1 off an assist from junior
Evan Shoemaker in the 3-on-3 overtime to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team a 2-1 victory over Concordia-Moorhead on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
A minute and a half into the extra session, St. Olaf (3-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) generated a 2-on-1 rush with Shoemaker and Pointer following a face-off in its defensive zone. After carrying the puck up the ice, Shoemaker waited and slid the puck to Pointer on his left and Pointer turned it home to give the Oles the win over Concordia (4-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAC).
The Cobbers took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on a goal by Alex Stoley at 11:10 of the opening period before the Oles evened the game at 1-1 midway through the second period. With St. Olaf on the power play, first year
Tyler Cooper netted his first collegiate goal, blasting home a one-timer from the left side after being set up by classmate
Troy Bowditch from the right side.
After Cooper's goal, the score remained tied until Pointer's second collegiate goal decided the game in the overtime period. The win snapped Concordia's four-game winning streak in the series, as the Cobbers had swept the Oles in each of the last two series between the two teams.
Senior
Cooper Lukenda picked up the victory for St. Olaf by saving all 16 shots he faced after entering the game at the start of the second period. First year
Thomas Lalonde stopped nine of the 10 shots Concordia got on goal over the opening period.
The Cobbers held a 26-19 advantage in shots on goal in the game but were 0-for-6 on the power play, including failing to capitalize on over a minute of 5-on-3 time early in the second period.
The two teams are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
