Men's tennis tops Saint Mary's on the road

WINONA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team picked up a 7-2 victory over Saint Mary's University in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match on Sunday at Winona Tennis Center.

Spencer Wick, Henry Smith, and Michael Yousef were each victorious in both singles and doubles for St. Olaf (1-1, 1-1 MIAC), which defeated Saint Mary's (2-2, 0-2 MIAC) for the third-straight time. Yousef's wins were the first of his collegiate career.

After the Cardinals put the first point on the board in doubles with an 8-6 win at the No. 3 spot, the Oles claimed wins at the top-two flights to take a lead into singles. Dez Young and Yousef edged their opponents at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker before Wick and Smith earned an 8-4 victory at No. 1 doubles.

Saint Mary's evened the team score at 2-2 with a win at No. 4 singles but St. Olaf won the final five singles matches to run away with the win. Wick, Smith, and Yousef each cruised to straight-set singles wins at the top-three singles spots to give the Oles a 5-2 lead and seal the team victory.

The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches both went the distance, but Ethan Bruha and Tony Klagge both recovered from dropping the second sets of their matches to outlast their opponents in super tiebreakers. Bruha claimed his match tiebreaker by a 10-6 margin at fifth singles, while Klagge won his by a 10-7 score at sixth singles.

St. Olaf heads to Sartell to face Saint John's for another MIAC match on Saturday, March 20 at 1:30 p.m.
