Men's soccer opens MIAC play with 4-1 win at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – Goals from four different goal scorers sent the regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team to a 4-1 road victory over Bethel University to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday afternoon at Ona Orth Athletic Complex.

Sophomores Victor Gaulmin and Casey McCloskey scored in the opening half for St. Olaf (3-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC), which got second-half goals from sophomore Ian Elliott and senior Lucas Gaulmin as well. The Oles held Bethel (5-1-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) to just five shots and no shots on goal in the game, as the Royals' lone goal was an own goal in the 58th minute.

The younger Gaulmin got the scoring started in the 21st minute with his second goal in as many games and his third of the season. Sophomore Jordan Oberholtzer set up the goal, beating a Bethel defender on the left, getting to the end line, and centering for Gaulmin to tap in from close range.

McCloskey matched Gaulmin for the team lead in goals with his third of the season in the 39th minute, beating a pair of defenders on the left before cutting towards the middle of the box and scoring from 10 yards out. The Oles outshot the Royals by an 11-1 margin in the opening 45 minutes and led 2-0 at the break.

Elliott tallied the first goal of his young career in the 57th minute to extend St. Olaf's lead to 3-0, rising highest in the box to head in a cross from sophomore Hakeem Morgan, who earned his team-leading third assist this season. Less than a minute later, the Royals got on the board via an own goal to make it a 3-1 game.

The older Gaulmin closed out the scoring in the 83rd minute by firing in a shot from five yards outside of the box after sophomore Ethan Kilmer laid the ball back to him.

Sophomore Austin Williams did not have a save to make on the way to his third win of the season.

The Oles, ranked No. 7 in Region IX in this week's United Soccer Coaches regional rankings, host Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 18 at 12:30 p.m. to begin a doubleheader at Rolf Mellby Field.
