NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team scored three times in 57 seconds in the first half and got goals from five different scorers in a 5-0 win over Hamline University on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Sophomores
Casey McCloskey,
Jordan Oberholtzer, and
Hakeem Morgan scored in the space of less than a minute midway through the first half to get St. Olaf (4-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) on its way to its second-straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory to start conference play. The Oles outshot Hamline (2-5-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) by a 20-3 margin to improve to 8-2-0 in the last 10 meetings in the series.
St. Olaf broke through with the opening goal in the 21st minute when first year
Shea Bechtel cut the ball back to an unmarked McCloskey at the top of the six-yard box for McCloskey's team-leading fourth goal of the season. Just 26 seconds later, Bechtel picked up another assist when his shot deflected into the path of Oberholtzer to turn in from close range to make it 2-0.
It took just 31 seconds after Oberholtzer's tally for the Oles to add a third goal, as Morgan scored from just outside the penalty spot after collecting a pass from senior
Lucas Gaulmin. Morgan's goal was his third to go with four assists in six games this season.
After outshooting the Pipers 14-0 in the opening 45 minutes, St. Olaf added a fourth goal inside the first three minutes of the second half when Morgan threaded a ball in behind to sophomore
Martin Machon, who picked out the top-left corner with his left foot for his first goal as an Ole.
Junior
Ethan Niles added his first-career goal in the 71st minute to close out the scoring, heading the ball home in front after junior
Felix de Siqueira knocked down a free kick Machon delivered into the box.
Sophomore
Austin Williams had just two saves to make in his 77:41 in goal to pick up his fourth win of the season. Luke Rimington had three saves but took the loss for Hamline.
