Men's soccer puts six past Wartburg in big regional win

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – In a matchup of regionally-ranked teams, the St. Olaf College men's soccer team scored five first-half goals on its way to a 6-1 victory over visiting Wartburg College on Tuesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (5-1-1) got goals from six different goal scorers in the game to defeat Wartburg (2-3-1) for the second consecutive meeting. The Knights entered the game ranked third in the region by the United Soccer Coaches, while the Oles were seventh this week.

Lucas Gaulmin, Thierno Gueye, Casey McCloskey, Victor Gaulmin, Liam Vance, and Hakeem Morgan all scored in the win for St. Olaf, which is off to its best seven-game start to a season since the 2013 team was 6-1-0. McCloskey scored for the third-straight game, V. Gaulmin tallied his third goal in the last four contests, and Morgan had a goal and an assist to give him two goals and three assists over the last three games.

Less than six minutes into the game, L. Gaulmin got the Oles off to a quick start, firing the ball into the lower-left corner of the net from the top of the box after being picked out by first year Shea Bechtel. The goal was Gaulmin's career-high third of the season.

St. Olaf doubled its lead less than 15 minutes later when Gueye turned in a cross from Morgan in front after a short corner. Just over three minutes later, the Oles made it 3-0 when McCloskey was on hand to tap the ball into an open net after the Wartburg goalkeeper spilled a through ball by Jordan Oberholtzer.

By halftime, St. Olaf stretched its lead to 5-0 with two more goals, the first coming on a penalty kick by V. Gaulmin in the 30th minute after McCloskey was fouled in the box. Ten minutes later, Vance picked up his first collegiate goal by looping a shot over the goalkeeper and under the bar from the top of the box after collecting a pass from classmate Clemente Arcuch Puig.

The Oles extended their lead further to 6-0 a little over 10 minutes into the second half when Morgan curled a left-footed free kick into the top-right corner from 25 yards out. With four goals and five assists through seven games, Morgan currently leads the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) with 13 points this season.

Kolby Fahner got one goal back for Wartburg in the final 10 minutes off an assist from Mason Lucas. Sophomore Austin Williams picked up his fifth win of the season by making four saves for St. Olaf.

The Oles return to MIAC play on Saturday, Sept. 25 when Macalester visits Rolf Mellby Field for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff.
