Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Morgan's quick goal in double OT gives Oles win at Luther

DECORAH, Iowa – Sophomore Hakeem Morgan scored his second goal of the game 21 seconds into the second overtime to give the St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 3-2 road victory over Luther College in a matchup of regionally-ranked teams on Tuesday evening.

St. Olaf (7-1-1) twice came from behind to tie the game in a four-goal first half after Luther (5-4-0) took a pair of leads in the opening 45 minutes. After a goalless second half and first overtime period, Morgan picked out the top-right corner from near the top of the box to give the Oles their second win over a regionally-ranked opponent in a week.

The Norse entered the game ranked third in Region IX by the United Soccer Coaches, while St. Olaf was fifth in this week's regional poll. The win was the Oles' fifth in a row, marking the program's longest winning streak since the 2015 team won five consecutive postseason games in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs and NCAA Tournament.

Prior to Tuesday, St. Olaf had not won in Decorah since a 3-2 overtime victory on Sept. 3, 2008 as Luther had won its last five home games in the series by a combined score of 12-1.

Luther took a pair of early leads in the opening 12 minutes thanks to a pair of goals from Marcos Vila. Vila opened the scoring just 4:56 into the game, but the lead did not last a minute, as sophomore Jordan Oberholtzer tied the game 52 seconds later by curling a right-footed shot into the top-right corner after forcing a turnover near the top of the Norse box.

The hosts went back ahead in the 12th minute when Vila got his second goal of the game and his sixth of the season. Luther maintained its 2-1 lead until Morgan grabbed his first goal of the night, heading in a cross from senior Lucas Gaulmin in the 40th minute.

St. Olaf outshot Luther by a 10-2 margin in the second half but neither team could manage to find a deciding goal. The Norse had the lone shot on goal in the first overtime session before Morgan won it for the Oles quickly in the second overtime.

With six goals and five assists in nine games, Morgan currently leads the MIAC in points with 17. The sophomore's 17 points are already the most by an Ole since 2017 (Kyle Leemon – 17).

St. Olaf hosts crosstown-rival Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 2 at 12:30 p.m. The Knights were ranked No. 22 in Tuesday's United Soccer Coaches Top 25 before suffering a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Augsburg on Tuesday afternoon.
