Swimming and diving teams sweep Hamline in MIAC duals

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams combined to win 25 of the 32 events on their way to sweeping their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) dual meets against Hamline University on Saturday at Bush Center Pool.

The Ole women won 13-of-16 events to defeat the Pipers by a score of 212-87, while the men claimed event wins in 12 of the 16 events to win by a 183-46 score. Junior Tim Rizzo led the way for the men by winning three individual events and swimming on a first-place relay, while first year Ellen Varley had three individual first-place finishes and swam on a winning relay.

Varley was one of four Oles who won multiple individual events and swam on at least one first-place relay, touching the wall first in the 50-yard freestyle (26.14), 100-yard individual medley (1:04.56), and 50-yard butterfly (27.92).

Junior Annika Cleven, sophomore Tatum Hauck, and senior Maya Knutson each placed first in two events individually. Cleven won the 100-yard butterfly (1:00.69) and 100-yard backstroke (1:03.56), Hauck won the 200-yard freestyle (2:07.01) and 100-yard freestyle (57.85), and Knutson claimed the 50-yard backstroke (29.56) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.54).

St. Olaf also got event wins from sophomores Signe Hauck in the 50-yard breaststroke (35.23) and Charlotte Thomson in the 500-yard freestyle (5:36.25). The Oles also won both relays, as Cleven, Sophia Nevin, Varley, and Knutson finished first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:54.32) and Knutson, both Haucks, and Cleven won the 200-yard freestyle relay (1:44.92).
Men's Recap

Rizzo won the 200-yard IM (2:01.70), 100-yard butterfly (54.33), and 500-yard freestyle (4:49.33) to pace the Oles and was a member of the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:43.50) along with sophomore Marcus Hauck, first year Avery Nevins, and first year Thomas McCarthy.

Hauck and classmate Daniel Bloedow also touched the wall first in a pair of individual events, with Hauck winning the 50-yard backstroke (25.73) and 50-yard butterfly (24.44) and Bloedow winning the 100-yard individual medley (59.64) and 100-yard backstroke (1:02.54).

Senior Sjon Greseth and first year Ben Gusdal added wins in the 200-yard freestyle (1:59.32) and 50-yard breaststroke (29.27), while also swimming on the first-place 200-yard freestyle relay (1:35.32) with McCarthy and Nevins. Junior Kyle Colby was the lone competitor in the one-meter diving and posted a score of 148.80 to win the event.
Both teams are scheduled to compete in another MIAC dual at Macalester on Saturday, Jan. 22 at 1 p.m.
