NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Visiting Gustavus Adolphus College scored twice in the final 10 minutes to defeat the St. Olaf College men's hockey team, 4-2, in a non-conference contest on Tuesday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Gustavus (5-10-2) led 2-1 after two periods before sophomore
Brendan Darby tied the game with a power-play goal early in the third period for St. Olaf (6-10-3). Joey Gimberlin tallied the eventual game-winning goal five minutes later for the Gusties, who tacked on an empty-net goal from Nick Klishko with eight seconds remaining to pick up sweep of the non-conference series with the Oles.
The games were originally scheduled to be played on Jan. 7-8 as Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) contests but were postponed due to positive COVID-19 cases in both programs. Per conference protocols, the games were rescheduled as non-conference contests.
After a scoreless opening period, sophomore
Luke Suter opened the scoring for St. Olaf at 4:11 of the second period, tossing a backhand into an open net after his initial shot was saved to give the Oles a 1-0 lead. Suter's goal was his fourth of the season and was assisted by first years
Ethan Hersant and
Jonathan Young.
Gustavus responded five minutes later on an unassisted goal by Dylan Gast to tie the game and, six minutes after that, grabbed its first lead of the night on a goal by Toby Sengvongxay. The Oles outshot the Gusties by a 15-4 margin in the second period but went into the locker room down by a goal.
Five minutes into the third period, St. Olaf went on the power play after a Gustie defenseman held
Tyler Cooper as he closed in on the net after collecting a stretch pass from
Kaz Matsuo. Cooper managed to get a shot away that was headed over the goal line before the net came off and the whistle went.
On the ensuing power play, the Oles tied the game as junior
Evan Shoemaker teed up Darby from between the circles for Darby's third goal of the season. Gustavus hit back five minutes later through Gimberlin's game-winning goal midway through the period and added an empty-netter with eight seconds to go after St. Olaf pulled
Thomas Lalonde for the extra skater with 1:31 remaining.
Grant Boldt made 35 saves to pick up the win for the Gusties, while Lalonde suffered the loss with 15 saves on the night for the Oles. St. Olaf held a 37-19 advantage in shots on goal in the game.
The Oles take on fourth-ranked Augsburg in MIAC play this weekend, starting with a 7 p.m. puck drop at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Friday, Jan. 28. Fans must be on a pass list with one of the teams and must provide proof of vaccination upon entry to the game. St. Olaf faculty, staff, and students who are on campus for Interim may also attend.
