NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Austin Martinsen scored just eight seconds into overtime to give fourth-ranked Augsburg University a 3-2 victory over the St. Olaf College men's hockey team in the teams' Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series opener on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (6-11-3, 3-5-1 MIAC) trailed 2-1 after Augsburg (16-2-0, 8-1-0 MIAC) scored a pair of goals late in the second period but tied the game at 2-2 on a goal by sophomore
Brendan Darby at 13:09 of the third. In the overtime, Gavin Holland won the face-off for the Auggies and got the puck to Martinsen, who weaved his way from left to right and scored five-hole on a backhand to give Augsburg its seventh-straight win.
The Oles were looking for their first win over a top-five team since a 3-2 victory over second-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 8, 2014.
After a scoreless opening 26-plus minutes, first year
Tyler Cooper broke the deadlock with a shorthanded breakaway goal at 6:38 of the second period to give St. Olaf a 1-0 lead. The goal was set up by first year
Jonathan Young, who cleared the puck off the glass ahead get Cooper in behind the Augsburg defense for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.
The Auggies struck back on goals from Kyler Yeo and Jarod Blackowiak in the space of 4:34 in the final six minutes of the period to grab a slender 2-1 lead. The Oles had chances on two breakaways just 30 seconds apart in the final 3:20 of the period, but Jack Robbel made saves to deny first year
Eric Brown and junior
Evan Shoemaker to keep the visitors ahead.
Augsburg maintained the one-goal lead until Darby netted his fourth goal of the season at 13:09 to tie the game at 2-2. After getting the puck from Brown, Darby carried the puck off the left boards to the inner edge of the left circle and fired the puck through traffic to being the Oles even.
St. Olaf had a chance to win in with 94 seconds remaining in regulation, but Robbel made a save to thwart first year
Cody Sherman on breakaway as Sherman was nearly the hero in his first collegiate game.
Robbel recorded the win for the Auggies with a 26-save performance, while first year
Thomas Lalonde was saddled with the loss after a 21-save evening.
St. Olaf heads to Minneapolis for the series finale on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink.
