NORTHFIELD, Minn. – After 34 seasons coaching tennis at St. Olaf College,
Scott Nesbit will retire from coaching at the end of the 2022-23 season, as announced by St. Olaf Athletic Director Ryan Bowles on Friday.
Since coming to St. Olaf prior to the start of the 1989-90 season, Nesbit has spent the last 34 seasons as the head coach of the women's tennis program and led the men's tennis program for 30 seasons through 2018-19, winning a combined 600 dual matches to date. Nesbit will continue to teach in St. Olaf's kinesiology department after this spring.

"Scott always brought his unique touch to teaching our student-athletes the game of tennis and the life skills needed to be successful in the future. I'm thrilled Scott will continue to be a member of the St. Olaf community."
In 33-plus seasons with the St. Olaf women's tennis program, Nesbit has led the Oles to a 340-213 (.614) record in dual matches, including a mark of 213-113 (.653) in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) matches. His teams qualified for the NCAA Tournament in each of his first three seasons from 1990-92, including an appearance in the national quarterfinals in 1990.
Since the tournament began in 2007, the St. Olaf women have appeared in the MIAC Playoffs in 13 of a possible 15 seasons under Nesbit's leadership, including back-to-back runner-up finishes in 2008-09 and 2009-10. The Oles won double-digit matches in 20 of his 34 seasons with the program, including each of the first 12 campaigns.
During Nesbit's 30 seasons leading the men's program, St. Olaf posted an overall record of 260-219 (.546) in dual matches, including a 158-111 (.587) mark in conference play. Nesbit led the Oles to eight-straight berths in the MIAC Playoffs from 2007-08 through 2014-15, including runner-up finishes in 2008-09 and 2013-14 as the No. 4 seed.
Prior to coming to St. Olaf, Nesbit served as the women's tennis coach at Wheaton College (Ill.), the men's coach at North Central College (Ill.), and an assistant women's tennis coach at the University of Illinois at Chicago, in addition to teaching at various tennis clubs as a United States Professional Teacher's Association (USPTA) teaching professional.
A 1979 graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, Nesbit played four years of tennis for the Blugolds and was selected to the NAIA Academic All-American team in 1978, while also being named UWEC's Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Nesbit was inducted into the Blugold Hall of Fame in 2011. Prior to attending UW-Eau Claire, Nesbit attended Edina East High School, where he was a member of two Minnesota state championship teams (1973, 1975) and won a state championship in doubles with Billy Arnold in 1975.
Nesbit and his wife, Elaine, have two daughters, Kate '12 and Stina '15, who both graduated from St. Olaf.
