Men's soccer ends UW-Platteville's unbeaten streak with 3-0 win

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The St. Olaf College men's soccer team got a goal and two assists from sophomore Shea Bechtel on its way to a 3-0 victory over UW-Platteville in a matchup of regionally-ranked teams on Monday evening at Ralph E. Davis Pioneer Stadium.

Bechtel scored what proved the be the only goal St. Olaf (10-5-0) would need less than seven minutes into the game and added an assist on both of the Oles' goals in the final 10 minutes. UW-Platteville (10-3-2) had been unbeaten in its last 12 games (10-0-2) after starting the season with back-to-back losses and suffered its first home loss of the season.

The meeting was the first between the two programs since 2011 and the win kept St. Olaf unbeaten (8-0-2) in the all-time series between the two programs. The Pioneers were ranked No. 3 in Region IX and received votes in the United Soccer Coaches national poll last week, while the Oles were ranked No. 4 in the region.

Juniors Casey McCloskey and Jordan Oberholtzer added goals less than three minutes apart late in the win for St. Olaf, which also recorded its ninth shutout of the season. The Oles have seven clean sheets in their last 10 games dating back to Sept. 13.

Bechtel netted his fifth goal of the season in the seventh minute to open the scoring, beating a pair of UW-Platteville defenders to get near the end line on the left before lofting the ball over the onrushing goalkeeper. The sophomore has at least one point in eight of St. Olaf's last nine games, including each of the last five.

Aiken made a save on a long-range shot by junior Hakeem Morgan a little over 10 minutes later and denied Bechtel his second goal of the game inside the final 15 minutes of the half to keep St. Olaf's lead at 1-0 at the break.

Sophomore Peter Forseth was forced to make a leaping save on a long-range shot by Brant Mueller less than a minute into the second half to preserve the Oles' lead. St. Olaf maintained the 1-0 advantage until the 82nd minute, when Bechtel slipped the ball inside on the break to McCloskey, who slotted the ball into the lower-right corner for his team-leading eighth goal of the season. McCloskey has scored in five-straight games and seven of the Oles' last eight matches.

Two and a half minutes later, Oberholtzer tallied his first goal of the season to seal the victory, firing the ball across goal into the lower-left corner after classmate Clemente Arcuch Puig got the ball to him on the top of the box on the right. Bechtel's two assists moved him into sole possession of fourth in program history with 20 for his career.

Forseth collected his third shutout of the season by stopping all four shots he faced for the Oles, who held a 16-12 advantage in shots in the game. Aiken had five saves in the loss for the Pioneers, who outshot St. Olaf by an 11-7 margin in the second half after being outshot by a 9-1 count in the opening 45 minutes.

St. Olaf plays its final regular-season home game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 22 when Concordia-Moorhead visits Rolf Mellby Field for a 12:30 p.m. kickoff on Senior Day.
