MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The No. 24-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team rallied from deficits of 2-0 and 3-2 before eventually settling for a 3-3 tie with regionally-ranked Augsburg University in its regular-season finale on Wednesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.
Augsburg (10-2-5, 3-2-4 MIAC) scored twice in less than a minute in the game's first 20 minutes to take a 2-0 lead before St. Olaf (11-5-1, 7-2-1 MIAC) tied the game midway through the second half thanks to a pair of goals from junior
Victor Gaulmin. After being reduced to 10 men, the Auggies took the lead back at 3-2 in the 85th minute, but the Oles responded a little over two minutes later with a late game-tying goal by first year
Caspar Olseth.
The tie coupled with Macalester College's 1-0 win at Saint Mary's University leaves St. Olaf and Macalester tied for second in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings with 22 points. The Oles need the Scots to lose at No. 5-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday in order to clinch the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals of next week's MIAC Playoffs. Otherwise, St. Olaf will be the No. 3 seed and host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, Nov. 1.
Augsburg took a 2-0 lead with a pair of quick-fire goals inside the opening 20 minutes, as Kebba Janneh scored from the spot in the 19th minute and Mizael Harris followed with a back-post header about 40 seconds later. St. Olaf halved its deficit before the halftime whistle when Gaulmin tapped in a rebound off a shot by first year
Robi Buzakovic to make it a 2-1 game at the break. By taking the throw-in that led directly to Buzakovic's shot, sophomore
Shea Bechtel picked up his 13th assist of the season to tie the single-season school record set by John Zietlow '11 in 2008.
Gaulmin doubled his tally for the night and pulled the Oles even at 2-2 in the 66th minute by burying a penalty kick after junior
Hakeem Morgan was taken down in the box. The two-goal night was Gaulmin's second two-goal performance of the season and brought his team-leading tally to nine on the season. The penalty kick came just over a minute after junior
Clemente Arcuch Puig rattled the right post with a shot from outside of the box.
Less than five minutes after Gaulmin's tying goal, Augsburg went down to 10 men as the result of a second yellow card, but, after weathering offensive pressure by the Oles, the Auggies got a counter-attack goal on a deflected shot from Jeffrey Richter in the 85th minute to take the lead back. The Augsburg lead only lasted a little over two minutes, however, as Olseth headed in a Morgan corner kick in the 87th minute to tie the game for a second time.
Oscar Herrera made a pair of saves to deny Buzakovic and junior
Casey McCloskey shortly after Olseth's goal to keep the game tied. Arcuch Puig nearly won the game for St. Olaf in the final minute, but his shot hit the outside of the post with 21 seconds to go.
The Oles outshot the Auggies by an 18-6 margin in the second half to finish with a 23-12 advantage for the game. Shots on goal were 13-7 in favor of St. Olaf, which also held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore
Peter Forseth made four saves in the game for the Oles, while Herrera had 10 stops for the Auggies.
