Young leads men's hockey to comeback win over No. 2 Augsburg

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team used three third-period goals to rally from a 2-0 deficit and claim a 4-3 victory over second-ranked Augsburg University on Saturday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

A day after Augsburg (6-2-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) scored a last-minute, extra-attacker goal to tie the game and went on to pick up a 6-5 win in overtime, the Auggies led 2-0 until the final seconds of the second period before St. Olaf (8-2-1, 4-2-0 MIAC) rallied over the final 20-plus minutes. With the Oles trailing 3-2 midway through the third, sophomore Jonathan Young scored the game-tying and game-winning goals five minutes apart to give St. Olaf a four-point weekend.

By taking four of the available six points, the Oles moved into first place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings with 13 points, two ahead of Saint John's University and Bethel University. The win was St. Olaf's second against a team ranked in the top two nationally since the start of the 2006-07 season (extent of USCHO poll archives) and the first since a 3-2 victory over second-ranked UW-Stevens Point on Nov. 8, 2014.

Young's two-goal game was the second of his collegiate career and both have come against a top-five ranked Augsburg team, as he had a pair of goals and an assist in St. Olaf's 5-2 victory in last season's MIAC Playoffs championship game.

Austin Dollimer gave the Auggies a 1-0 lead at the first intermission by putting home a loose puck in front after a blocked shot at 15:20 of the opening period. In the second, the visitors quickly doubled their lead when Grant Reichenbacher scored on the backhand on an odd-man rush just 47 seconds into the middle period.

With Augsburg appearing to be headed into the second intermission with a 2-0 lead, the Auggies committed six penalties over the final 2:35 of the second period and the Oles capitalized with a 5-on-3 goal in the closing seconds to make it a 2-1 game. After winning a faceoff in the offensive end, junior Parker Casey eventually teed up a blast by sophomore Tyler Cooper that caromed off the back wall for sophomore Troy Bowditch to turn home from close range for Bowditch's 15th point of the season.

With St. Olaf still on a 5-on-3 power play, sophomore Connor Kalthoff tied the game at 2-2 with a one-timer from straight on just 44 seconds into the period after getting the puck from first year Jonathan Panisa and Cooper. The teams traded goals just 15 seconds apart midway through the period, with Dollimer giving Augsburg a 3-2 lead with a power-play goal at 9:23 before Young benefitted from a fortuitous bounce to tie the game just 15 seconds later.

A little over five minutes later, Young scored the eventual game-winning goal by driving to the net on the forehand after Bowditch flung the puck off the right boards from deep in his own defensive zone to spring Young in behind the Augsburg defense. Junior Lukas Haugen made four saves after Young's game-winner to help St. Olaf seal the win and senior Ashton Altmann threw himself to the ice to block a last-ditch shot in the closing seconds.

Haugen made a season-high 32 saves to remain unbeaten this season at 4-0-1, while Jack Robbel had 23 saves in the loss. St. Olaf blocked 15 shots in the game, led by four from junior Noah Heisler.

The Oles host the Milwaukee School of Engineering in the first meeting between the two programs since 2001 on Friday, Dec. 9 at 7:30 p.m. on the team's Senior Night.
