LAKEVILLE, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team dropped its season opener to perennial conference champion Gustavus Adolphus College, 9-0, on Saturday afternoon at Lakeville Life Time Fitness.
Gustavus (1-0, 1-0 MIAC) dropped nine games on its way to a doubles sweep and won all six singles matches in straight sets to defeat St. Olaf (0-1, 0-1 MIAC) in the season opener for both teams. Six Gusties were victorious in both singles and doubles in the match.
The closest score line of the three doubles matches came in the No. 3 doubles match between sophomore
Jakub Belik and senior
Tony Klagge and Taona Mhwandagara and Rafael Costa, with the Gustie duo coming out on top by an 8-5 margin. Seniors
Ethan Bruha and
Tim Roback won three games in their No. 1 doubles match as well.
In his collegiate debut, sophomore
Lorenzo Cazzamali pushed Oscar Wikstrom to a tiebreaker in the first set of his No. 1 singles match before falling 7-6 (3), 6-2. Bruha put four games on the board in a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Caleb Fridinger at No. 3 singles and the Gusties dropped just three games in the other four singles matches.
St. Olaf takes on UW-Eau Claire in a non-conference match on Saturday, Feb. 19 at West Hills Tennis & Fitness Center in Owatonna.
