Bethel defeats men's tennis, 7-2, to break tie in MIAC standings

LAKEVILLE, Minn. – Sophomore Lorenzo Cazzamali recorded a straight-set win at No. 1 singles and the tandem of sophomore Max Loesch and junior Henry Smith earned a win at No. 2 doubles for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team in a 7-2 loss to Bethel University on Friday evening at Lakeville Life Time Fitness.

Bethel (9-7, 4-3 MIAC) took two of three tightly-contested doubles matches and got wins at No. 2 through No. 6 singles to break a tie with St. Olaf (5-6, 3-4 MIAC) in the in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings.

All three doubles matches were decided by three games or fewer, as the Royals picked up an 8-5 win at No. 3 doubles and an 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles to take a 2-0 lead. Loesch and Smith gave the Oles a point heading into singles with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for their fifth win in their last six matches.

Cazzamali's 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles was the lone point St. Olaf got from the six singles matches, as the sophomore claimed his third win in his last four matches. Sophomore Jakub Belik won the first set of his match at No. 6 singles before falling 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) in the lone match of the night to go the distance.

The Oles play at Concordia-Moorhead in their second of back-to-back matches on Saturday, April 23 as part of a men's and women's doubleheader at noon.
