ST. PAUL, Minn. – Sophomore
Shea Bechtel recorded a goal and two assists as the St. Olaf College men's soccer team won its 12th-straight Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) game with a 4-0 victory at Hamline University on Saturday afternoon at Pat Paterson Field.
Juniors
Hakeem Morgan and
Victor Gaulmin scored in the first half before junior
Zac Harvey-Latham and Bechtel found the back of the net after the break in the win for St. Olaf (4-3-0, 2-0-0 MIAC). The victory was the Oles' third in a row in the series against Hamline (2-4-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) and was the team's first road win of the season.
St. Olaf opened the scoring in the 15th minute when Morgan scored directly from a corner on the second of back-to-back corner kicks after Hamline goalkeeper Luke Rimington tipped away a drive from Gaulmin from the top of the box. The goal was the junior's third of the season and the 18th of his career in 29 games.
A little over eight minutes later, Gaulmin got his first goal of the season – the 10th of his career – with a towering header under the bar off a cross from Bechtel on the right wing. The Oles took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break after outshooting the Pipers by a 14-3 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
Less than 15 minutes into the second half, St. Olaf extended its lead to 3-0 when Harvey-Latham netted his first goal in an Ole uniform. Bechtel had a role in the goal, finding junior
Jordan Oberholtzer on the left before Oberholtzer slid the ball to the middle for a tap in for Harvey-Latham.
Bechtel added a goal to his pair of assists less than two minutes later, firing the ball inside the far post with his left foot from the right side of the box. Bechtel's four assists this season are tied for the second-highest total in the MIAC to date.
Sophomore
Peter Forseth only had one save to make in the game to claim his second shutout victory of the season in three starts. Rimington made seven saves in the loss for Hamline, which generated just five shots and two corner kicks in the game.
St. Olaf hosts Luther College in a regional matchup on Tuesday, Sept. 20 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
