ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team picked up its sixth win in its last seven matches by sweeping Macalester College by scores of 25-16, 25-11, 25-21 in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Saturday night at the Leonard Center.
After seeing its five-match losing streak come to an end the night before against No. 20-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College, St. Olaf (15-8) brushed aside Macalester (8-14, 2-6 MIAC) by posting its highest attack percentage (.327) in a MIAC match this season. The victory was the Oles' first sweep of a conference opponent this season.
Seniors
Catherine Moore and
Anysia Caille continued to lead the way offensively for St. Olaf by recording 13 kills apiece, with Caille hitting .545 and Moore hitting .308. Junior
Maycie Rogers and first year
Maren Miller added seven kills apiece as well.
Sophomore
Paige Christophersen made it seven double-doubles in the last nine matches with 23 assists and 10 digs, while first year
Skylar Fildew fell just short of a double-double with 15 assists and nine digs. Fifth-year senior
Selena Rodriguez registered a match-high 19 digs to go with eight assists and an ace.
Five Oles had multiple kills in the opening set and Rodriguez made nine digs to help St. Olaf to a 25-16 set win. Leading 10-9, the Oles won five-straight points – three on attack errors by the Scots – to open up a 15-9 cushion and led by at least three the rest of the set. Later, St. Olaf won six points in a row to turn a 17-14 lead into a 23-14 advantage.
The second set did not include any ties or any lead changes, as the Oles won the first six points and never looked back on their way to a two-sets-to-none advantage. St. Olaf hit a blistering .500 with 18 kills and one attack error in the set to win it by a 25-11 margin. Moore had six kills on eight errorless swings in the set, while Rogers and Caille both had four kills without an error on five attempts.
St. Olaf broke open the third set with a 7-0 run to go up by eight at 18-10, but Macalester hung around to go within four at 23-19. After a kill by Caille brought up a string of match points for the Oles, Macaletser saved two of them before Caille ended the match with her fifth kill of the set on eight errorless swings.
With three MIAC matches remaining, St. Olaf is tied with Bethel University for the sixth and final spot in the MIAC Playoffs, although the Oles do hold the tiebreaker by virtue of a head-to-head victory this season. St. Olaf is back at Skoglund Center on Friday, Oct. 27 for a home match against Concordia-Moorhead at 7 p.m.
