Volleyball downs Cobbers in back-and-forth five-setter

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team hit .290 in the deciding set to pick up a 25-23, 23-25, 25-17, 24-26, 15-10 victory over visiting Concordia-Moorhead in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Friday night at Skoglund Center.

St. Olaf (16-8, 5-4 MIAC) gave its hopes of earning a spot in the MIAC Playoffs by winning the odd-numbered sets in a back-and-forth win to move even with Concordia (14-12, 5-4 MIAC) in the conference standings. The Oles and Cobbers are part of a four-way tie for fourth through seventh place, with the top-six teams qualifying for the MIAC Playoffs.

Fifth-year senior Selena Rodriguez made a career-high 39 digs – the most by an Ole since at least 2002 and the second-highest total in the MIAC this season – and was joined in double figures by sophomore Morgan Ryan with 21. Rodriguez's 39 digs surpassed her previous career-high total of 34 in her seventh-career performance with at least 30 digs.

Senior Anysia Caille tallied a match- and career-high 21 kills and hit .271, while classmate Catherine Moore added a season-high 19 kills while hitting .273, as the duo combined for 40 of St. Olaf's 72 kills in the victory. First year Maren Miller was also in double figures with 10 out of the middle, while senior Erica Collin contributed eight.

Both St. Olaf setters recorded double-doubles on the night, as first year Skylar Fildew had a season-high 34 assists to go with 10 digs and sophomore Paige Christophersen tallied 29 assists and 10 digs.

The Oles overcame a 16-12 deficit to win the opening set behind a combined 14 kills from Caille and Moore. In a four-point hole, St. Olaf went on an 8-1 run to take a 20-17 lead, with Caille delivering four kills in the run. The Cobbers fought back to even the set at 23-23 before Caille finished off her eight-kill set with kills on the next two points.

In the second set, it was Concordia's turn to rally from a mid-set deficit, as the visitors tied the match at a set apiece. St. Olaf led 18-12 before the Cobbers went on a 10-3 run to claim a 22-21 lead, only for the Oles to get a kill and a block from Caille to take the lead back. Concordia finished the set with a pair of kills and an ace to even matters at a set apiece.

St. Olaf raced out to a 6-1 lead in the third set and led by at least three the rest of the set to go back ahead by a set. Concordia won a back-and-forth fourth set that included 11 ties and six lead changes to force the match to a decider. The Oles were two points from the win with a 23-20 lead in the fourth before the Cobbers won six of the final seven points to stay alive.

Trailing 4-3 early in the fifth, St. Olaf won four-straight points to grab a 7-4 advantage, but Concordia fought back to tie the set at 8-8 later with a 3-0 run. Clinging to a one-point cushion at 11-10, the Oles closed out their second five-set win of the season by winning the last four points of the match. Moore had kills on three-straight points to bring up match point before fifth-year senior Christina Cheng delivered a kill to seal the victory.

St. Olaf makes the long trip to Duluth to face the College of St. Scholastica on Saturday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. at Reif Gym.
