DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team secured its sixth consecutive berth in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs by sweeping the College of St. Scholastica by scores of 25-13, 25-17, 25-16 on Saturday afternoon at Reif Gym.
On an afternoon that saw senior
Catherine Moore reach the 1,000-kill milestone, St. Olaf (17-8, 6-4 MIAC) picked up its eighth victory in its last nine matches with the sweep of St. Scholastica (3-21, 1-9 MIAC). The win was the Oles' 15th in the last 16 matches in the series and their fourth sweep of the Saints in the last five meetings.
With the victory and results elsewhere in the conference, St. Olaf clinched a spot in the MIAC Playoffs for the 14th time. The Oles can be seeded as high as No. 3 heading into the final round of regular-season matches in the MIAC next weekend.
Moore entered the night seven kills shy of 1,000 for her career and became the 19th Ole to reach the milestone by tallying a match-high 13 kills on 22 swings with a .409 attack percentage. Junior
Maycie Rogers added 11 kills on 21 swings while hitting .381 for St. Olaf, which hit at a .281 clip as a team. Sophomore
Paige Christophersen and first year
Skylar Fildew combined to assist on 33 of the Oles' 41 kills in the win.
Coming off a career-high 39 digs in a five-set win over Concordia-Moorhead the night before, fifth-year senior
Selena Rodriguez recorded a match-high 13 digs to go with three assists, while sophomore
Morgan Ryan contributed 11 digs and four aces. Fildew also had four of St. Olaf's 12 aces in the win.
Moore wasted little time in getting to the 1,000-kill mark by delivering seven kills on 10 swings in the opening set, including three in a 7-1 start to the set for the Oles. The closest the Saints got the rest of the set was 8-4, as Rogers provided kills on three-straight points and Fildew hit back-to-back aces as part of a 6-0 run that gave St. Olaf a 14-4 lead. The Oles held the Saints to just four kills and a .000 attack percentage in the opening set.
St. Olaf hit at a .324 clip in the second set and led the entire way after winning the first four points. Ryan had two aces on the first four points of a set that included five aces by the Oles. St. Scholastica was not able to get closer than three points after facing the early deficit.
Seven Oles had at least one kill in the third set to help St. Olaf to its second MIAC sweep of the season. The Saints jumped out to an early 4-0 lead, but the Oles responded with a 5-0 run of their own to make the St. Scholastica lead short-lived. St. Olaf broke an 8-8 tie with a 7-0 run to take the lead for good and led by at least six for the duration of the match.
St. Olaf hosts a split triangular on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 3-4 at Skoglund Center, as the Oles face the College of Saint Benedict at 7 p.m. for Senior Night on Friday night before taking on nationally-ranked UW-Stevens Point at 4 p.m. the following day.
