NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams both fell to visiting Gustavus Adolphus College in their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) home duals on Saturday at Skoglund Natatorium.
Led by three event victories from first year
Samantha Sylvester, the St. Olaf women were edged by the Gusties by a score of 153-147, while the men were defeated by a 220-80 margin. Senior
Oscar Hanifl provided the highlight of the day for the Ole men, meeting the NCAA qualification standard on the one-meter board by winning the event with a score of 428.3.
Sylvester led the way for the St. Olaf women by being the first to touch the wall in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.98), 200-yard backstroke (2:13.87), and the 100-yard butterfly (1:01.67). The first year led 1-2 finishes for the Oles in two events, as senior
Rachel Stumpf was the runner-up to Sylvester in the 200-yard backstroke (2:16.06) while junior
Ellen Varley did so in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.87).
Seniors
Izzy Treanor and
Hannah Richey both met the NCAA qualification standard for the St. Olaf women, finishing 1-2 in the one-meter diving with 11-dive scores of 435.34 and 411.6, respectively. Sophomore
Paige Steenblock added a pair of first-place finishes as well, winning the 200-yard butterfly (2:17.63) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:14.77), and was the runner-up in the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:26.52) to senior
Charlotte Thomson.
The Ole women also had a winning swim in the 200-yard medley relay from Stumpf, first year
Alana Schmitzer, Varley, and Sylvester in 1:52.78.
