NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's and women's swimming and diving teams split their first Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) duals of the season against Saint John's University and the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday at Skoglund Natatorium.
The St. Olaf women won 11 of the 13 events to ease to a 163-78 victory over Saint Ben's, while the men had three first-place finishes in a 160-83 loss to Saint John's. Three Oles won multiple events in the win over the Bennies.
Senior
Izzy Treanor, who picked up her seventh MIAC Women's Diver of the Week accolade earlier in the week, broke her own school record in the one-meter diving by recording an 11-dive score of 457.72 over two sessions. The score was over 25 points higher than her previous record of 431.00 and was just over two points shy of the pool record.
Senior
Charlotte Thomson was the first to touch the wall in both the 1,000-yard freestyle (11:12.47) and 500-yard freestyle (5:32.43) and led a 1-2-3 finish for St. Olaf in the 1,000 free, as sophomore
Paige Steenblock was second (11:38.34) and senior
Mara Johnson was third (12:30.50).
First year
Alana Schmitzer added first-place finishes in the 100-yard freestyle (55.74) and 100-yard breaststroke (1:10.80) for the Oles. St. Olaf had the top-three finishers in the 100-yard breaststroke, as Steenblock was second (5:43.48) and senior
Tatum Hauck was third (5:44.86). Hauck also won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:04.54, edging junior
Lexi Cucchiaro by less than half a second at the wall.
In addition to her two second-place performances, Steenblock won the 200-yard individual medley in 2:17.54 to led a 1-2-3 finish with senior
Rachel Stumpf (2:19.86) and Thomson (2:22.07). St. Olaf's other first-place finishes came from junior
Ellen Varley in the 100-yard butterfly (1:02.62) and first year
Samantha Sylvester in the 100-yard backstroke (1:00.58), in addition to a first-place result from Sylvester, Schmitzer, Varley, and Cucchiaro in the 200-yard medley relay (1:53.68).
For the St. Olaf men, senior
Oscar Hanifl took first in the first one-meter diving session with a score of 163.73 and sophomore
William Wallace won the 50-yard freestyle (21.86). Senior
Marcus Hauck, sophomore
Nick Starcevich, senior
Daniel Bloedow and Wallace were first in the 200-yard medley relay (1:38.60) as well.
Both St. Olaf teams face Gustavus Adolphus College in their second-straight home MIAC dual on Saturday, Nov. 11 at 11 a.m.
