Justin Oliver, the St. Olaf College men's soccer program's coaching staff was honored as the United Soccer Coaches 2023 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer National Coaching Staff of the Year, as announced on Friday afternoon.
After being named the 2023 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Region IX Coaching Staff of the Year earlier in the month, St. Olaf's staff of Oliver,
Matthew Gibbons,
Ben Braman,
Tyler Keith, and Brian Sullivan was honored as the national staff of the year to cap a season that ended with the program's first national championship.
This fall, St. Olaf won the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season and playoff titles before going on a run to claim its first national title. For the second time in three seasons, the Oles went undefeated in conference play, securing their eighth MIAC regular-season title with an 8-0-2 record.
St. Olaf proceeded to win its second-straight MIAC Playoff title before knocking off four nationally-ranked teams on its way to its first national title, culminating in a 2-1 overtime victory over Amherst, after never having advanced past the "Sweet 16" previously. The Oles finished the season 20-3-3 overall, with the 20 wins establishing a new program record and tying Messiah for the most victories in the country this season.
After starting the season 1-3-0, St. Olaf went 19-0-3 the rest of the way to close the season on a program-record 22-game unbeaten streak. As a team, the Oles finished the season first in the country in total points (215), second in total goals (77), second in total assists (62), and seventh in goal differential (+51). St. Olaf established single-season program records in goals, points, shots attempted (461), and shots on goal (210), while posting its second-highest assist total in program annals.
