Men's hockey falls at Augsburg in series finale

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team twice tied the game after trailing by a goal before Augsburg University scored the final two goals of the game to grab a 4-2 win and a series split on Saturday evening at Ed Saugestad Rink.

St. Olaf (5-5-2, 3-2-1 MIAC) tied the game at 1-1 and 2-2 in the second period, but Augsburg (5-3-1, 3-1-0 MIAC) broke the second tie of the game inside the final four minutes of the middle period and added an insurance goal early in the third. Both teams were 2-for-5 on the power play in the game, as the Oles got goals from sophomore Kelijah McElroy and senior Parker Casey in the loss.

The Auggies broke through on their third power play of the opening period with a power-play goal by Nick Catalano to open the scoring at the 17:28 mark and took the 1-0 lead into the second period. Early in the second, it was the Oles' turn to cash in on the power play, as McElroy netted his third goal of the season off assists from first year Tyler Green and junior Matthew Pointer. The assist was Green's team-leading sixth of the season and his fifth in the last four games.

Landon Parker restored Augsburg's lead at 12:09 of the second period, but St. Olaf answered just 2:07 later on Casey's second goal of the season to tie the game for a second time. Juniors Connor Kalthoff and Tyler Cooper picked up assists on Casey's goal. The tie lasted just 2:04, however, as Nick Catalano struck for the eventual game-winning goal at 16:20 of the second for the hosts, who got an insurance goal from Fritz Belisle in the first four minutes of the third period.

Augsburg held a 30-26 edge in shots on goal in the game. Senior Lukas Haugen had 15 of his 26 saves in the opening period for St. Olaf, while Samuel Vyletelka made 24 saves in the win for Augsburg.

The Oles take on Bethel University in a non-conference outdoor game at the Recreation Outdoor Center in St. Louis Park on Saturday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.
