Salfer breaks hurdles record, women's track and field second at Tostrud Classic

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Rebekah Salfer broke the school record in the 60-meter hurdles and recorded one of three event victories for the St. Olaf College women's track and field team, as the Oles placed second at the Tostrud Classic on Saturday at Tostrud Center.

Salfer won the 60-meter hurdles with a school-record time of 9.12 seconds, which was over two-tenths of a second faster than her previous personal-best time. The junior broke the previous record of 9.23 seconds set in 2004 by Becky Peterson and matched in 2014 by Dani Larson. Salfer's time ranks third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) this season.

Junior Melanie Roberts and first year Grace Moeller also posted first-place finishes for St. Olaf, as Roberts won the pole vault (3.20m, 10' 6") and Moeller took first in the 800-meter run (2:22.72). Roberts' clearance is currently third-best in the MIAC, while Moeller's time ranks sixth in the MIAC.

The three event victories were among 15 top-five individual finishes at the meet for the Oles, who took second with 108.50 points in the team standings. Colorado College edged St. Olaf at the top of the standings with 116 points, while the College of Saint Benedict was just 5.5 points behind the Oles in third.

Senior Annika Muller and junior Ainslee Parker both recorded runner-up finishes in the jumps, as Muller was second in the long jump (5.34m, 17' 6 ¼") and Parker was second in the triple jump (10.72m, 35' 2"). Salfer joined Muller in the top three in the long jump in third (4.79m, 15' 8 ¾"), while Roberts cracked the top four in the triple jump in fourth (10.16m, 33' 4").

Sophomore Jules Fromm and first year Lauren Walda registered third-place finishes on the track for St. Olaf. Fromm placed third in the 600-meter run (1:40.77), while Walda was third in the one-mile run (5:18.86). Sophomore Sophie Abernethy was just behind Walda in the mile in fourth (5:19.05).

Abernethy's finish was one of four fourth-place performances for the Oles, as sophomore Emma Storbakken tied for fourth in the 200-meter dash (27.27), first year Ella Landis was fourth in the 1,000-meter run (3:07.59), and junior Aleah Keske placed fourth in the shot put (10.81m, 35' 5 ¾").

Sophomore Emma Johnson joined Keske in the top five in the shot put in fifth (10.68m, 35' ½"), while junior Peyton Irsfeld was fifth in the weight throw (13.28m, 43' 7"). Irsfeld's throw saw her rise one spot to seventh on St. Olaf's all-time list in the event, while Johnson moved up one spot to eighth with a throw of 12.82 meters (42' ¾'). Junior Rachel Nelson also cracked St. Olaf's top-10 list in the 60-meter dash with a time of 8.38 seconds in the prelims, tying her for 10th in program history in the event.
