SARTELL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team dropped a 6-3 match to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foe Saint John's University on Saturday afternoon at Sta-Fit.
Saint John's (3-6, 1-1 MIAC) picked up victories at the top-two doubles spots and the bottom four singles positions to deal St. Olaf (4-6, 1-4 MIAC) the setback in the Oles' third-straight road conference match. The loss snapped a modest two-match winning streak for St. Olaf, as the Johnnies won their seventh match in a row in the series.
Juniors
Max Loesch and
Jerusalem Thao gave the Oles their lone point in doubles with an 8-5 victory at the third spot for their second consecutive MIAC victory. Saint John's carried a slender 2-1 advantage into singles, however, thanks to an 8-5 win at No. 1 doubles and an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles.
The Johnnies used their depth in singles to record straight-set wins at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 singles to finish off their first conference victory of the season. First year
Bogdan Vizoli and senior
Henry Smith both claimed super-tiebreaker wins at the top-two singles spots for St. Olaf.
Vizoli ran his winning streak to six matches and registered his team-best seventh victory of the season – his fourth in five MIAC matches – with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 win at No. 1 singles, while Smith recovered from dropping the opening set to earn a 4-6, 6-2, 10-4 victory at No. 2 singles. Smith's victory stretched his winning streak to three matches and was his fifth of the season, trailing only Vizoli in that department on the team.
The Oles head to Florida for four matches over spring break, beginning with a 1 p.m. CDT start against NCAA Division II opponent Lynn University on Friday, March 24 in Boca Raton.
